Pros & Cons: (10/10)
Pros: There is day & night, there is a radio, you not only are in the Johto region, but also are able to travel to the Kanto region. You can get up to 16 badges. There are special bug catching contests. Here you battle Team Rocket multiple times. You can name you rival. Your mother saves your money, and buys you things. The battle tower was introduced in this game. This game is also the first game with a female starter character.
Cons: This game is old, and is made for gameboy color. The graphics aren’t as great as Ruby, Sapphire and so on. The move tutor only teaches 3 moves. The cloning glitch is gone.
The Game Itself: (10/10)
This must be the best Pokemon game from all the GBC Pokemon games to GBA Pokemon games. When you start a new game, there are already a few great things to this game. First off, you learn that there is a Morning, Afternoon, Night. The main reason for the Day Cycle is in the Pokemon that you encounter. You may be in one area, but throughout different parts of the day, the Pokemon change. Let’s say for example you are in a grassy area in the afternoon. You would see maybe 60% Rattata. However there may be a 20% chance you will see Poliwag or 20% Hoppip. When the evening time rolls around, you may see 90% Hoothoot, and 10% Rattata.
The second thing is your rival. Your rival here is a mystery person. He will steal a Pokemon from Professor Elm’s lab. When he does, an officer will ask you to identify the person. Here you could name the person whatever you like.
The third and most important thing is the starter trainer. You could either be a boy, or a girl. This game is the first one which allows you to play as a girl. As your adventure begins, you travel throughout the region of Johto.
While in Johto, you encounter many obstacles. There is for example Team Rocket who try to take over several different cities and towns. There is also a Sudowoodo who won’t move out of the way without being watered with a watering pail, a red Gyardos which Team Rocked was responsible for, a Suicune which battles you head on, and then there are other Pokemon like Raiku and Entei, Lugia and Ho-oh, and Lapras. You also are able to battle in a Battle Tower, and also you are allowed to go to the Kanto region and earn 8 badges there after you beat the Indigo Plateau.
The Storyline: (10/10)
Yes! The storyline for one was way better then the Kanto region. See, in every Pokemon game, there are legendary Pokemon. In B/Y/R, there are the legendary birds aka Moltres, Zapdos, Articuno, while in G/S/C there are legendary dogs called Raiku, Entei, Suicune. In Pokemon Gold and Silver, the main Pokemon were Lugia and Ho-oh. While in Crystal, it was Suicune. Also, I felt that this game had a much bigger and more understanding storyline then the other games. Here, obviously you must encounter Suicune. But, there are some obstacles. For starters, this man named Eusine loved following your tracks because he wants Suicune. I liked how this particular game stuck to the original story of Pokemon.
When you encounter the Red Gyardos, it was because of Team Rocket. You also encounter Lance, who helps and guides you to beating Team Rocket. Another great thing about this game was the fact that you got two eggs. The first one was obviously Togepi. The other egg had either a Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Smoochum, Elekid, Tyrogue or Magby. I also liked how this game went on for a long time. You start off in Johto, get all 8 badges, beat the Indigo Plateau, go to Kanto, get all 8 badges, battle Ash at Mt. Silver, and finally, catch all 251 Pokemon in the game.
Graphics: (5/5)
Honestly, these graphics didn’t bother, and for a GBC game, it was pretty good. Even though the graphics improved greatly over the Pokemon games following Crystal, the graphics in Crystal were very nicely done.
Music: (5/5)
I honestly loved this music. This game is the only one which had pretty good music, at least in my opinion.
Final/Overall Thoughts: (10/10)
In my opinion this is my absolute favorite Pokemon game so far. Yes, the graphics aren’t as great as GBA games, and true, there are only 251 pokemon, but honestly, I just loved the features this game had. Also, I loved the fact that Suicune was the main pokemon featured in this game. I definitely think that if you get this game, or if you have it already, you will not be disappointed =).
