Pokemon Crystal: Reviews

Game Score: 9/10

The Pokemon Yellow to Red and Blues Gold and Silver. Unfortunately there is no single special pokemon to start of with but still this is as absorbing as the rest of the epic series.

Gameplay 9/10
The same winning formula from the other games. The clock system from Gold and Silver along with the radio stations (sadly missing from Ruby and Saphire but this isnt the place to discuss that). The map is double the last games and includes the Hoen region (Red and Blue). the game is quite long and will keep you occupied for some time whilst you try to 'catch 'em all' again.

Graphics 8/10
Vibrant and almost beautiful. Unfortunately many character graphics were reused from red and blue leading you to believe that graphicaly very little has progressed in the series but the colours realy make a huge difference and the vibrance of the oranges, red and greens are going to be burned into the back of your retina for some years to come.

Sound 7.5/10
Its a gameboy colour game so the sound isn't going to win any contests but for a GBC game its pretty catchy and the Gym battles tune is allways a source of confidence as you go forth to battle for another badge. Reusing sounds from Red and Blue may have seemed like a nice idea at the time nintendo but actualy its just painfull especialy when Blastoise still sounds like a dustbin.

This game however is not without its flaws and there are criticisms that must be addressed.
1. The sound of the old pokemon is exactly the same as previous games which in all honesty amongst the shiny new sounds of the new pokemon is painfull.
2. No special starting Pokemon as in Yellow version :(
3.Can get boring and confusing for non-Poke fans
4. A little too similar to Gold and Silver
5. Still a lot of white on the screen

On the whole however I would say this is the best Pokemon game on GBC and quite possibly the best Pokemon game ever (not played Emerald yet however).
There is just an innocent fun time to be had in the care free world of Pokemon and Crystal presents you with a huge world to explore and a huge amount of Pokemon to capture aswell as enough little features to tinker with when your too tired to go adventuring. Once again Nintendo have offered us their hand and if you take it they will show you the world...
