Sonic Rush: Reviews

Game Score: 8/10
Sonic over the recent years has been kind of getting boring, and deviating from what he does best. Some people like it, but most certainly do not. When the DS was announced, there was confirmation of a new Sonic game. They promised it would be using the DS to its full potential. I understood that to be controlling Sonic in a 3D world, using the stylus. I was proved wrong. But not totally wrong.
Plot: (6/10)
2D Sonic games haven't really stood out as great story tellers. This one is no real exception. Eggman has got his hands on a new type of Emerald, The Sol Emeralds. There have also been sightings of another Eggman (Eggman Nega) and a purple cat (Blaze). Tails figures out that the space time continuium is totally messed up. Its up to Sonic, and indeed Blaze, who is from an alternative universe, to stop the Eggmen. (*groan* Eggmen! *groan!!*)
Graphics (9/10)
To the day I obtained it, nothing really stood out as DS in terms of graphics. Some came close, but still looked last gen handheld overall. Sonic Rush is a 2D platformer at heart. But its done what more recent makes of old games have done, and thats use 3D graphics on a 2D stage. Its more obvious during Boss Battles, but even on the stages, it has a more 3D feel. I personally love the look it has, and watching myself blitz through as Sonic is nail bittingly awesome!
Gameplay (10/10)
Wow. It does what Sonic does best. Run very fast, from left to right. Thing is, it does it perfectly. Not since the Genesis Sonic's has the blue hedgehog looked so good. The trick system is a cool addition. Basically, when grinding rails, jumping from springs, etc, you can press buttons, which get massive points, and raise the bar on the left. It has 3 levels, blue, yellow and flashing red. It goes down when you press the Y button, but you also go very very fast, and can't be hurt, unless you fall to your death. It is also used to get into Special Stages. They look fairly classy, and are basically controling Sonic, with the stylus, in a Sonic 2 styled tone. They are easy at first, but the last one can be a problem. Bosses aren't overly difficult. There is usually a theme to the battle. Some ideas even reused, from this or other games (The first one is reminisent of the last battle from Sonic Adventure 1).
Sound (8/10)
The sound is typical Sonic, mixed with new stuff. It all fits in well, and does its job. The music on the other hand is a different story. Its, different. In a good way. Some of the tunes have annoying parts, but certainly the latter stages are upbeat, and tension inducing at times (Boss Battles). My only complaint. Tails and Cream, saying Yes on the level select practically every time you move. Its highly annoying. Other than that, Sega's done wonders!
Longetivity (7/10)
This is where I stop singing the games praises. Its way too short, compared to other Sonic games, and for a veteran, quite easy. Newcomers will have a challenge. Some stages can be difficult, but eventually, when you 100% the game, you feel under-nourished. You want more. Unfortunately, the game has nothing else to offer 1Player wise. Multiplayer however can make use of your time nicely, though I personally haven't dabbled too much into it.
Certainly the most promising Sonic game to date, its a shame its so short. You almost want it to expand even more. Other than that, the visuals are amazing, gameplay is mind blowing, and the sound is definitely the best I've heard from a Sonic game in years. If you need another reason to play handheld games, here it is.
