First a disclaimer - I don't like sports games - generally....
When i was a kid (ie 15 or so years ago) there were some golf games that really pushed the PC to the max, gems like Links (the old skool one) the kind of game which you had because it had the best graphics and not because it was seen to be good.
But like all of those must have games, you eventually find yourself playing the thing to find out what the "buzz" is about. Althogh "buzz" when discussing a golf game may be a bit of an overstatement it is still valid. Links ate my life - the challenge to be BETTER than my friends, to get ever further distance drives, to master the dreaded "9iron evil wind conditions" scenarios these were the glory days of sport games with competition levels rivalling the modern FPS/2D Fighter - this was our first Deathmatch.
So what does this have to do with Nintendo Touch Golf - well - it brings back all the memories of Links complete with vengeful desire to crush all in my wake. When the dual screens fire up with the title Nintendo Touch Golf - Birdie Challenge - it's not just a title it really is a challenge - birdies in this game are well earned - just like real golf.
The swing mechanism is superb - in my opinion the best ever impemented - with the bottom screen serving as a sing and control screen and the top screen indicating the course in glorius (read: not so special) 3D - the interface feels superbly functional which is what one should expect from Ninty. All fluff is left aside and golf reigns superem. The courses are varied and range from simple elegant and easy - hit it straight and true and birdies will be yours, to hit it straight and you will be eating rough for breakfast.
Now I may sound like a golf zealot but this game is fairly deep, offering the ease of an easy round to a 10 champisnhip pro tour complete with custom gloves, clubs, shoes etc. IE. A career mode. Add the ability to Suspend at any time and you have a game that is truly portable, something ALL portable games should do.
As to mass appeal, I consider my gaming friends fairly diverse, I will play Ico, Fantavision, Amplitude, Phoenix Wright etc, where my buddy sticks to Pokemon, JRPGS and assorted turn based chaos, whereas the other man of the "review crew" has a hankering for God of War, FPS and Driving Games - please tell me how I never got to TOUCH my DS for 24 hours while they tag teamed Nintendo Touch Golf to death.
It is a good game and it is a must have - for any fan of "turn based strategy" with "hand-eye co-ordination" skillsets required.
A true tester of gaming skill and oddly satisfying - a round under par is a good round indeed. Difficulty scales well and multiplayers options are equally pleasing.
The music is pleasing and even though I have now clocked 20hours+ i still leave the music on - and indication of good BGM, graphically the game is a good balance between gameplay elemets and visual elements - you will not feel visaully robbed and the graphics are similar to the classic Links 2000 era - very respectable on a portable.
I rate this game an overall 8. It is NOT perfect, it would be nice to have a wider range of club choices, maybe a caddy skill (knowing how far you can hit a ball is a skill), and more options in character customization in terms of the models themselves - there are only 2. Well as this game is not Barbies Playhouse I am not overly concerned.
Get it now - can't believe how fun golf is.
PS: I don't play golf - i think it is purile to smash a ball then go look for it and smash it again - making a sport out of "kicking a pinecone", silliness, that said digital golf doesn't have the whole hit-walk-find-hit philosophy.
