Super Monkey Ball - Touch & Roll: Reviews

Game Score: 8/10

It was originally a Gamecube exclusive, now we see it on every system bar none. But the Monkey Ball series is definately a series that transcends any age and/or gender gap making it accessible to all who like a bit of fun in their games.

The DS version of this title is a very welcome one. The last portable machine to receive a Monkey title was the GBA and, while a technical accomplishment indeed, left a little to be desired when it came to digital controls. Monkey Ball just isn't a game that should be played with anything less than analog, and thankfully, the DS can deliver. Super Monkey Ball DS comes with a similar control scheme to that of Mario 64 DS in that the touch screen is used as a psuedo-analog stick. However, this title is much more intuitive than the portly plumber's and Sega have done an extremely good job of keeping the controls tight. So good are they they are almost as good as an analog stick itself and it isn't long before you forget that you are using a stylus and are truly immersed in the game.

In terms of graphics, the 3D engine used in this title is very impressive. Super Monkey Ball has never been a major drain on resources, and so the game can be lovingly reproduced on the DS' mediocre 3D engine with ease and precision. In some cases the worlds look better than their previous counter-parts. One sacrifice which seems strange at first though is the replacement of our monkey in their 3D ball with 2D sprites. While implemented nicely in terms of feel, they do stand out as being a touch out of place if looked at for any amount of time. Luckily though you won't be looking at your monkey too much as the levels require as much pinpoint precsion as ever.

The interface for Super Monkey Ball DS has been improved upon in my opinion with more style added to the overall art direction. Add in all your regular monkey ball favourites, including wi-fi access and you have on your hands a great title that will while away any boring afternoon with no trouble. Lack of internet support is a bit of a downer but expected. Certinaly worthy of any DS collection, especially if you were a fan of the previous titles.
