Cooking mama Sure it sounds weird and corny but it's from japan so what do you expect?

Let me start off saying that Cooking mama is one of most unique games ever to grace the DS I mean how many times have you seen a game related to cooking on the DS. None thought so. How about on ANY other system. Well there are a few but most aren't nearly as innovitive as Cooking Mama. The mini-game like layout make it able for anyone to pick up and play.

First the overview, You start off with only a few basic recipes but if you keep practicing and trying to impress Mama you will eventually unlock more and more, The game has 75 recipes each made and prepared realisticly so if you could put together a basic lunch in the game if you used the same ingrediants in real life you would end up with the same thing.

Gameplay Score: 8 Done well

Like I said in the opening paragraph the mini-game format make it easy to pick up and play I meant exactly that! After choosing a recipe (in this case a sandwich) you are then propelled into the kitchen wih mama watching you and giving instructions at the top screen, But you'll be looking at the bottem most of the time. The food making is divided into a series of steps requiring you to do various things such as choping carrots and tomatoes to boiling spagetti, All within the time limit of course. Also the time you'll have to do in these mini-game varies, when your boiling noodles and such you have a few minutes while chopping food inconsrast only gives you a few seconds. The things you'll have to do varies as well in chopping you'll , Of course slash your stylus across the screen like your actually chopping the vegeatable in boiling sessions there will be coloured bars on the top of the screen and you will have to do something like raise the temparture judging on the bar. At the end of all levels there will be an un-times mini-game where you actually decorate what you cooked, if it was a sandwich you could put all your favourite sandwich ingrediants in and even add a little flag to the top!

Graphics Score: 7 Nice and simple

The graphics in the game are nothing too special. Their not great 3D pictures, Their instead simple 2D pictures done in nice colours the game doesen't look realistic except on the food, much else is done chibi like. Simplistic and charming is a good way to discribe the graphics. I personally like the face when Mama is angry at you ith flames coming out of her eyes and how happy she is when you do a good job. All in all its all very cute!

Verdict

Cooking Mama is a well rounded game that just about anyone can play. Its a very good game when you need to just have a break it might not be a good idea to choose the more hectic recipes but theres a lot of modes including practice mode where you just practice doing a recipe.

All in all though most people would be able to enjoy cooking mama wether its for a few minutes or the whole afternoon this game is sure to please if only for a short while.
