Metroid Prime Hunters: Reviews

Game Score: 9/10

Let me start off by saying that I am a touch biased about this game because I'm a crazy fan of mouse and keyboard setups versus, say an XBOX type control scheme. I actually chose the DS over the PSP because the FPS games of the DS are closer to the mouse and keyboard, and Metroid Prime Hunters does not disappoint. It is a very solid game that is sure to please FPS and Metroid fans everywhere, however it is not without it's share of faults too.

Gameplay- The way you play the game is using either the Directional Pad or ABXY buttons to move around, depending on setup, and the stylus is used for aiming and looking around. You can also play the game somewhat like a classic console FPS but that isn't nearly as intuitive without any auto-aim or such to aid that. The stylus on the other hand is awesome, it's a lot like a mouse in the way you can quickly flick your character around to engage targets. It does take a little bit of getting used to, but when you master the technique, it is both more intuitive and accurate. The only gripe I have about the way you play, is that it cramps your hand at first. This goes away after you find a comfortable position to hold the DS. Overall, it is very cool way to play an FPS.

Storyline and Content- This part is a little lacking in my opinion. The whole notion of octoliths really felt gimmicky to me, and the story didn't even attempt to connect to the player. This is the part that is really weak in the game and could have been improved by leaps and bounds. The level design is relatively linear when compared to other Metroid games. Another gripe is that the bosses are repeated! The devs unfortunately did not focus much on the bosses, and there are two main types of bosses and subsequent subtypes. That really ticked me off. The different bounty hunter thing doesn't actually assist in the whole storyline bit and just become nuisances after a while. Nothing really spectacular to me here.

Multiplayer- This is where Metroid Prime Hunters really shines, the multiplayer aspect. It has single card, multi-card, and wifi play and many types of game modes such as deathmatch or CTF(Called Capture the Octolith, or something like that). I wouldn't have cared if Metroid Prime Hunters only shipped with multiplayer, because it is really good fun. The different characters allow for much more varied gameplay on the twenty something maps. The only thing that takes away from the experience is the bothersome friendcode system, but that's not the developer's fault. You really have to experience this for yourself, the multiplayer PWNS!

Graphics and Sound- Not much to say here really, the graphics are sweet for a DS, but it does get grainy when in scope with the sniper sometimes, but very pretty for a DS game. The sound was ok, I didn't really pay attention to it and it didn't get on my nerves so it is fine in my book. For those of you obsessed with sounds in a game, the music isn't exactly brilliant and it was kind of eerie but as I said it doesn't mess with the gameplay at all. I don't really have much to say about this.

Overall- The only thing that keeps this from a ten is it's rather pitiful storyline. Otherwise, brilliant game.
