New Super Mario Bros.: Reviews

Game Score: 9/10
Basically what Nintendo did was take all that was good from Super Mario
1, 2 (Japan version), 3, World, 64, and 64 DS and rolled it into one game and
threw in a couple twists. You get the power ups, flag poll at the end of each
level, and the “99 1up trick” from SMB1. You get the overview map from SMB3. You
get the physics, triple jump, wall jump, and butt stomp from Mario 64. You get
the ability to revisit past levels, some levels have more than one exit leading
to different paths, “ghost houses,” and item storage from Super Mario World. And
finally you get improved mini games much like the ones in Mario 64 DS. There is
no real story to this game. Bowser sends Bower Jr. to kidnap Peach Toadstool and
the story takes off from there.
The addition of the mega (Mario becomes a giant) and mini (Mario turns
very small and can walk on top of water and jump very high) mushrooms adds a
level of strategy because certain events and areas can only be accessed when
Mario is very large or small.
Multiplayer:
> Single cart multiplayer
> 4 player mini games
> 2 player “battle games” (Mario vs. Luigi)
> Haven’t played multiplayer yet so I can’t make any real comments about it
The good:
> All the sprite animations are very smooth
> You can play as Luigi by holding down L and R as you choose your saved game
> It has a very “old school 2-D plat former” feel to it that I think many
present day plat formers are lacking
> Blue turtle shell and Mega/Mini mushroom power ups give the game a fresh new
feeling
> Each level has three large gold coins hidden away. These gold coins allow you
to open up new paths and levels in each world
> Two of the worlds can only be unlocked if you beat the boss from the previous
world as mini Mario (having the mini mushroom power up) thus adding a level of
difficulty.
The bad:
> Some of the earlier levels are on the easy side. Don’t expect much of a
challenge until later in world 2.
> The fire flower power up seems a little too powerful for my taste. Most
enemies take damage when hit with a fireball
> The blue turtle shell power up can be a little too hard to control if you are
not paying close attention to your surroundings
> No Yoshi (sad face)
Final say:
New Super Mario Brothers for the DS combines good old school 2D platforming in a
3D world. Despite the aforementioned cons to this game, they should not prevent
you from buying this. Fans of any past Mario platformer game will defiantly get
a kick out of this title.
