Electroplankton: Reviews

Game Score: 6/10

Let me start by telling you that 'Elektroplankton' is not a game. Anyone that tells you it's a game is wrong. I don't care what they say! The best way to describe this piece of software is a 'virtual, electronic instrument'. It's not as versatile an instrument as a guitar, or a piano, but its an instrument nonetheless. It's a very simple thing to play - you have about a dozen or so 'elektroplankton' to choose from. Each type has their own unique way of being 'played'. You go to a screen unique to that plankton and you can play music using that plankton type.

So for instance, one plankton type has you spinning them round and round in circles - bit like spinning plates - and they play a note according to how fast you spin them. Another type, you just draw a line and they follow that line and play a scaling note according to the height or depth of the line etc etc.

All in all, this is quite a beautiful piece of software and one that will bring a smile to pretty much everyone who plays with it or even stands next to you as your playing with it. It's charming and it's gentle.

The one thing I will warn you about is that it does lose its appeal very quickly - this is simply down to the fact that each plankton can be played in a unique way and there's only a dozen or so of them. So be aware that whilst you might while away an hour or two upon first loading this up, it's not something that will keep you occupied night after night for a few weeks.

One other thing to mention is that you do not record your music - it's all played in real time - so it's a bit like a jam session with no recording equipment.

Overall, I really like it, but it's exactly the kind of thing that I could not actually pay money for. It'll keep me entertained for a an hour or two, but not much else.

9/10 for the first three hours.
2/10 for longevity.

Definitely worth a download!
