Mario hoops is to basketball what Mario Kart is to kart races. Simplified and modified rules, a lot of items to spice up the game and of course, lots of fun.
The DS touch screen is used for all the basic moves: shooting, passing, sidesteps, and more. You'll have to pick up 3 characters to form your team. You can choose between Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Wario, Peach, Yoshi, Diddy Kong, and so on, though despite the wide selection of characters, there only seem to be a few different types of players.
The graphics are really good, and the game isn't messy even on the little screen of your DS.
The really bad point of the game is the lack of wifi mode. The only way to play with another human player is to have a friend with a DS and the game... which is not the case of everyone.

Anyway, the gameplay is really good and you'll have a lot of fun even if you're not a big basketball fan. It's been my favourite sports-like mario game since mario kart (the first one on the SNES, which I spent a lot of time playing with friends.) A must have for your DS.
