Avatar - The Last Airbender: Reviews

Game Score: 7/10

Avatar - The Last Airbender, probably one of the most successful shows that Nick has decided to show since it take on an anime feel yet retains the American style. This game takes on an Action RPG format and in it you take on the role of Aang and friends and follow through the story which I assume is closely related to the show and other side stories are adapted for this game.

Story - For those who don't know what this series is about, there are 4 tribes on the planet in this world. They consist of the 4 elements and as such some of them are attuned to these elements and can bend them to their will (hence the 'bender' part in the name). However there is one being that can bend all the elements and he is called the Avatar and is reincarnated throughout the ages. Anyway in some strange event Aang was frozen and during that time period the other nations of Fire, Water and Earth began to war against each other. When he comes to Fire Nation is growing more and more powerful and as the Avatar it is his duty to restore balance to the force... I mean to the nations.

Graphics - The graphics are just about exact replicas of what you would see in the show so the game pulls off the cel-shaded look very well in it's pseudo 3D-world. The different areas are not detailed too much but that doesn't stop it from being decent, overall this game looks very nice.

Gameplay - As stated before this is an action RPG which means you will be mashing a button to attack over and over. While this works for some time you also have other things are your disposal. You have certain bending attacks which use the elements in different ways such as a wind gust or dashing around on top of an air ball. At most times you don't need to defend but there is that option as well as a 'special defend' which uses up the energy meter like your other bending. For the most part this game is a 'Go from point A to point B' linear type of game, perhaps there is a few twists woven in but none that doesn't lead to the main objective of getting to this area or finding this thing. Strangely though I didn't find myself bored at all as I did these.

Sound - During the field areas the music of the game is alright and decent but when the main story events happen or boss battles the music begins to get more pumped up, but there are no memorable tracks that I can pinpoint. Overall the music is decent and shouldn't bother anyone.

Replayability - Sadly, there is no replayability in this game. You get to the end and then... that's it no New Game+, no extra things to do or even the ability to travel back to old areas of the game. You are just stuck at the last level of the game at the last place you saved.

Difficulty - This game is sort of weird in terms of difficulty, in the beginning I thought the game was too hard and taking into consideration the targeted audience for the game I didn't know how they would pass the first boss. Once you get the revive spell though the game becomes considerably easier from using all the money you get to buy recovery items to just letting them die so Katara can revive them to full health. After that the difficulty increases slightly but nothing that will endanger people or items in your household.

Overall - This game is a good game to borrow from your friends and then when your finished give it back. While the game is actually quite decent without any replayability this game falls short. However this is a solid game much better than I expected so if you need an RPG fix or just a random game to play then I would easily recommend this.
