REVIEW FOR JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES - THE FLASH

Usually, when you think about speed, there are three characters you may think: Speedy Gonzalez and Road Runner from Looney Tunes, and The Flash from DC Comics. The Flash itself is one of the most well-known DC heroes, alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan, anyone?). But besides Superman and Batman –the World’s Finest – no another character had his/her own game, only some appearances in Justice League Task Force or one of the two main DC characters.
With Justice League Heroes, they decided to release games for the most home consoles, with the main story on the PS2/GC/X-Box and side-stories on the DS and the GBA. And the GBA version got a whole game just about the scarlet speedster, The Flash.
The story tells what Flash was doing while you’re not playing him on Justice League Heroes for the big systems, starting on the hero’s hometown, Keystone. You visit some places that you already know from the 126’s versions, like Metropolis, but you also visit places like Gotham City (the Dark Knight’s territory) and Themyscira (the land of the amazons) while investing Braniac’s activities.
You play as the Flash, the fastest man alive, running in high-speed and defeating criminals in a game like Beat-them-Up genre, much like Final Fight and Double Dragon games, but with Flash’s special powers. As the GBA’s buttons are limited, you have some basic moves, just as super-velocity (helps to get from one enemy to the another), attack, summon a league member to help with an devasting attack (Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow and Black Canary, all of them have two attacks) and a super-speed mode, when you move in high-speed while everyone else is slower, besides combination attacks, much like any fighting game you play.
Not only this, some levels and the bosses requires a bit of strategy, like Sunken City stage (I just LOVE this boss fight!), many times you may find yourself in a pinch with many enemies or interesting boss fights, it’s just a matter of thinking the best way out.
The graphics were a pleasant surprise. After playing Justice League Injustice: for All and Justice League Chronicles, I was afraid of ugly 3D graphics adapted to the GBA, even more with the versions for 3D systems. Fortunally, this game was done using sprites, like the old good SNes games, but clean and crispy, with fluid animation for all characters, specially the Flash and the bosses.
Another good surprise is the sound. The musics are moody, with a good variety and helps the player get immersed in the atmosphere. The Flash and the bosses have voice acting, and you can actually understand what they are saying, not some games where the voice are distorted. Of course, after hearing Flash saying “Fastest man alive” or “Unstoppable” for the 494957849th time can be quite irritating sometimes.
The game is somewhat short, with only five levels with two or three zones and one boss (some might have two or more phrases), with some small secrets like the almost-obligatory Boss Mode and a small race between The Flash and Superman (quite hard).
The major problem with the game isn’t it’s short, but the end. The game is really fun to play, but finish it just to discover that you have to play Justice League Heroes to continue the story might be frustrating.
In the end, Justice League Heroes: The Flash is a fun game to play, they managed to put the best of the character within a portable game. Not only that, it’s not a poor rip-off adapt of it’s bigger brother, Justice League Heroes, but a game if it’s own. The visuals and sounds are incredible, the bosses are amazing and it’s fast gameplay can be both challenging and fun. If you’re looking for a good 2D action game, you should try this one. If you decide to get Justice League Heroes, it might be a good side-story, if not, it’s still a good game to play.
