Gyakuten Saiban 2: Reviews

Game Score: 10/10

One would expect sequels to never live up to the first, if you know someone who says that, then spit in their face! Gyakuten Saiban 2 brings all the wonderful writing the first game was known for, plus we are given a great liberty to change the language from japanese to english; as with the first rendition of the game on the NDS. Though, small typos are peppered through the game, it won't hamper your experience, it is solid throughout, and you might not even notice them. Just like the first game, it still offers the great interface the GBA version lacked, you can easily and comfortably glide through the evidence lists. The great art style still lives up to the first, if not better; the sprites are crisp, clean, and wonderfully beautiful, but also easy on the eyes. There are a few new BGMs nestled comfortably with the series mainstays, and the sound effects are just as clear, expect no damp, dull, and bland sounds, even the bip bip bip of the dialog scrolling by sounds nice to listen to. The gameplay has a new addition of "Psyche-Locks" the player must break these Psyche-Locks to get the secrets out of witness testimonies, or to discredit their lies. The Psyche-Locks also replenish the health bar you have in trials. What's that? What health bar? Well, apart from the first game, you had a set of five strikes before you lose a trial, each strike is dealt out when you present irrelevant evidence. Now, however, the system is more complicated, when you accuse the witness of being a murderer without evidence, your health bar automatically goes to zero, when you do small stuff like annoy the judge with irrelevant evidence on small accusations, then you get a small chunk taken out of your health bar. It is definitely a more realistic approach to the game. Fresh new characters are introduced, alongside the original staff of the game. Even Maya makes a reappearance to help you! This game was great fun to play, uncovering evidence at crime scenes, while uncovering the story is seamlessly intergrated with great effect. As I mentioned before, you can change the language from japanese to english and back; so you won't have to wait for a stateside release(comes out in the us in 2007) to understand the game. There's nothing I disliked about the game, apart from the seemingly infantile judge, though a small qualm, this one is a 120% in my book.
