I know what you're thinking... this game SUCKS. Well... you'd be quite wrong my friend. Nictoons Battle for Volcano Island on the Nintendo DS is actually enjoyable, and playable compared to other Nicktoons games!
This game, Spongebob, Danny, and Timmy have been selected as the chosen ones to save Volcano Island from being destroyed by an ancient evil. Yes, it's cheesy, but at least there's a bit of plot compared to other Nicktoons games. As you get through the levels, you get some moments of dialogue that actually have quite a bit of charm, and it seems that everyone here is in character. Not bad... not bad at all.
The gameplay is a platformer, that involves quite a lot of jumping! In the first part of each level, you have to collect three crystals, and how do you get them per se? You have to use the stylus on the touch screen when you see these weird creatures that have their snouts up in the air, so that Cosmo can get the creatures to spit the crystals out. Remember, you have no idea from the start which ones have crystals, so you WILL have to check them all. After getting the crystals, you can open a gate to the next part of the level, which is straight forward platforming that inolves going from Point A to Point B. After you reach point B, you'll be treated to a boss fight.
All the characters to play differently, yes. As far as jumping goes, Spongebob can float, and Timmy can double jump, Danny isn't much of a jumper unfortunately. For combat, Spongebob has a powerful, slow moving bubble that does have a bit of range, Danny has a button mashing combo that can pretty much destroy anything if he hits them with all parts of the combo, and Timmy uses what looks like a fire extinguisher, so he can do rapid damage, but it's relatively weak otherwise.
These graphics are quite colorful. Volcano Island is a beautiful place to look at, and the characters are drawn nicely, that you'd think you were watching a Nicktoon. Sound for a Nicktoons game, is top notch! The soundtrack is incredible, the tunes are quite memorable.
If I had to say anything about this game that's flawed, it's simply that the gameplay is just too repetitive. Each stage in the game involves the same three objectives, collect the crystals, get to the other side of the level, fight the boss. Even though the level layouts are completely different, you're mostly stuck doing the same thing over and over. The other flaw is that it doesn't take advantage of the stylus all that well, I wish there was more to use it for than just tapping a couple creatures to get them to spit a crystal out.
So, in an endless sea of terrible Nicktoons games, this one stands out the most. I highly recommend giving it at least a rental, but if you can shell out $20, this game is quite enjoyable.
