Scurge Hive: Reviews

Game Score: 7/10
This is actually the first review I've ever done. I'm writing this review on Scurge: Hive. I will first of all mention, that if you decide to get this, make sure to get the GBA version, not the DS version. There's no difference other than the map being on the lower screen. The whole time I played this game, I felt like it was something I'd played before. I had Metroid Deja Vu the whole time playing this, and not in a good way.
Gameplay: 7/10 While it does give you an immersive world to explore, full of monsters, energy creatures, and emchanical organisms, the sprites repeat very early, and most small creatures move faster than you, and push you around the screen a lot. I give it a seven just because it's okay enough to be playable, though there will be times when you want to rip your hair out in frustration, and not because a creature is challenging, or a boss, as much as some of the environment's puzzles.
Story: 6/10 Infection takes over planet, go to planet to get samples, ship crash lands. And that's pretty much the story. After that, you're just travelling from checkpoint to checkpoint, reading logs the previous inhabitants left behind, and searching out the next upgrade to continue. It's like they wanted to just have their own little piece of metroid. It is a decent knock-off if you want something to occupy you while you wait for the new metroid or megaman.
Controls 8/10: I like the controls. I just wish I had a joystick. It gets tough to only have 8 directions of firing, when your enemy is usually between 3 and 4. Switch your weapon with R, thankfully briefly pausing so you aren't getting attacked... L button gives you a grappling arm to help tug boxes around. A jumps, B shoots. Really, not too bad. I just wish I had better range of fire and movement.
Sound: 6/10 Really, just your typical space age music. Nothing spectacular, and definitely not anything memorable.
If you're bored and need something to play really badly, search this out for the GBA, or Snag the DS version if you like maps on your screens. It's a decent B list game. If you're looking to buy, make sure it costs less than fifteen dollars first. It's okay to rent this one. You'll beat it in a few days if you're a lazy-player like me.
