Ryuusei no RockMan - Dragon: Reviews

Game Score: 8/10

This is the first time I played a Rockman/Megaman RPG game. Before I dabbled in several of the action-based Megaman games, but found my action reflexes wanting and thus never went too far inside those games.

I am really surprised at how much I am enjoying this game. The Japanese is very easy to read because it is almost all hiragana (with spaces to separate the words), which is no surprise because the game is aimed at kids, but the story and atmosphere captured my 30-year old heart. My Japanese is a very rudimentary, but what little I could understand of the story got me hooked. The story mostly revolves around the protagonist helping people manipulated by dark forces which promised them deliverance when they were cornered by the situation in their lives. In my opinion, Japanese games almost always have better stories than their western counterparts, and they reserve a larger portion of game-time to tell stories, so the fact that I am hooked to this for-kids game's story doesn't surprise me.

The battle system is a good combination of action and strategy, a friend of mine told me that the system is pretty similar to the system in Megaman Battle Network for the PS2. We have a collection of battle-cards, and every round in the battle we will be given a set of 6 battle-cards at random. After we selected battle-cards we want to use from that randomly picked 6, we can then use them to obliterate the enemies. I don't really understand how the selection system works (from those 6, sometimes I can pick 5 cards at once, sometimes only 2, 3, 4), but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of battles.

I found the graphics attractive in its simplicity and cuteness, the walking around stage are presented in isometric 2D, and the battles are in 3D. I found the sound and music inadequate, I bored the hell out of myself and the wife when the listen to the sounds and the music of this game. She is forced to listen to them over and over again because of the long hours I spent by her side playing the game.

The game provides an interesting "brother-system." We can be brothers with the in-game characters, and we can also be brothers with other Ryusei Rockman players. We can then trade battle-cards (when in battles, I noticed the cards has "share-star" property, is probably has to do with sharing battle-cards with other players. I never tried this feature, because none of the people around me has this game.

The main story is engaging; the side quests plenty and the stories attached to them are interesting if the rewards (items) are a bit so-so; the battle-system is interesting, and is easy to learn-hard to master, which is an elusive quality sought after by all RPG battle systems.

In short, I like this game and has spent more time than I should with it.
