Game Score: 8/10
Finally a decent standalone DS Sudoku game for the DS. Other efforts on the system have proved to be vastly inferior to the Sudoku that is held inside the Brain Age game. Puzzle Series Vol 9 - Sudoku 2 Deluxe takes the best parts of Sudoku Gridmaster and the Brain Age portion and mixes them together to make a very cohesive, although fairly short, package.
Storyline - N/A
No storyline here, just straight DS Sudoku.
Graphics - 6 / 10
Boards are plain with no variations of color or backgrounds during the game. Some asthetic decorations such as those found in Sudoku Mania might have spruced up the look a bit. The grid is shown on both the top and bottom screen and is very clear and easy to read on both screens. Menu screens are clear with varied icon colors.
Sound - 6 / 10
Standard electronic video game fare with a hint of classc Japanese tones thrown in. Nothing spectacular but it is a puzzle game.
Gameplay - 8 / 10
This is on of the two areas where the game stands out. The easy of control in navigating the board could not be simpler. Click on the square you want to enter the number into and it becomes the active location. Just as in Sudoku Gridmaster, the game hightlights across, down, and in the same 9 square as your selection to help you quickly scan the board for numbers. From the menu on the right of the board, you can enter numbers using either a digit selector or by writing recognition. There are also options to move back more than one step and then even to move back forward again.
The game contains both normal Sudoku boards as well as training boards in order to help build your skills. As you complete boards, you will be working against a time limit in order to earn stars. Finish the board quick enough and earn a perfect four star rating for that board.
Touch Screen use - 8 / 10
The other shining area of the game. Where Sudoku Gridmaster mad horrible handwriting recognition, this game works are good or better than that which is found in Brain Age. After working several dozen puzzles, I had no issues at all with the number recognition. The software easily distinguished between 7's and 1's and had no troubles detecting 5's as well.
Language Barrier Ease - 7 / 10
Menus are 90% Japanese but are very easy to navigate using a little common sense. Once you get into the game iteself, there are obviously no issues with the numbers.
Final Word -
Mixing the extra features of Sudoku Gridmaster and the number recognition of Brain Age, Puzzle Series Vol 9 - Sudoku 2 Deluxe emerges as the best game of Sudoku available on the DS to date. There are plenty of puzzles in various difficulties to keep you entertained and tutorials to help those who are beginers. This is an easily recommended pickup.
