Personally I love puzzle games, whenever a new DS puzzle game is released I'm usually the first one on line to check it out and give my own feedback on it. If you're a hardcore puzzle gamer I am sure you have kept your eye on the previews and waited for its release, but if you're just an average gamer I'm 99.9% sure that its a game that you will overlook while you browse the DS list of games. But with a price tag of just $20 bucks (US currency) how can you go wrong? I can confidently say that you get more than what you pay for, and heres why.
STORY (8/10)
You are trying to help the Penko (your space ship) advance towards your goal. There is a cast of characters in the game, but I don't really want to spoil anything for you, all I can say is that you will appreciate and enjoy their presence as the game goes on. A very simple story line, and you shouldn't be expecting anything more in a puzzle game.
GAMEPLAY 9/10
The game is very easy to learn. It's so easy that the learning curve is just seconds from hitting the start button. The challenge comes in when you try to combine the blocks for larger combos. The Penko is fueled by connecting blocks in to 3x3 cubes, from this the cubes can be chained together, and like every other puzzle game, the larger your chain the bigger the outcome, in this case the further Penko will advance towards the goal.
There are five modes: Arcade Mode, Story Mode, VS Mode, Endless Mode, and Tutorial Mode. Arcade Mode is very easy but alot of fun to play, a decent player can beat it in 15-25 minutes. Story Mode is made up of 45 missions that vary in mission goals, with each one having its own time limit. VS Mode can be a single card play for up to 2 players or it can be multicard which can play up to 4 players! In VS Mode the host sets the goal of the mission and attempts to reach it before another other players. Endless Mode, like the name says it, is a non stop mode where you try to reach the 99th dimension (sounds cool eh?). All the modes contribute to the total points you earn that grants you coins! Coins can be used as screen decorations or different sound effects when a chain is completed. The controls are tight meaning you have complete control of the game.
GRAPHICS 10/10
The game has absolutely beautiful graphics, its simple but the simplicity fits the game very well. It doesn't look like it was just thrown in there, it actually blends in well with everything else. The style of this game really sets it apart from other DS puzzle games and with additional features of the game such as purchasing more screen decorations there is more depth to the graphics. Definitely won't strain your eyes.
SOUNDS 10/10
A puzzle game needs a great music score to make it easy and nice on the ears, and this game has it. When the music is on you'll end up being soothed and soon it becomes a part of your normal hearing, once the music is gone, that's when you notice how nice it was. You can also purchase more sounds that gives some variety to the game as you complete chains. The sounds really suit the game well, and they go very well together.
REPLAYABILITY 10/10
Very High, the game has done its job to keep the average gamer coming back for more. It has a fun Arcade Mode, a pretty long Story Mode, and an Endless Mode that keeps you on your toes in attempt to last as long as you can. The difference modes continues changing the pace of the game and the variety of the game being offered (3 games in 1!). Let's not forget the VS Mode's with the single or multicards...that alone will leave you busy for hours with another friend or friends. Keep in mind all modes adds to your coin accumulation, so yes you will definitely be playing this game for those unlockables.
OVERALL 9/10
Buy the game when you see it you won't regret it. It only costs $19.99(US) or in this case a small fee of Download Points for alot of fun. This game will be a nice addition to the DS's library of puzzle games. You won't be disappointed at all about the game, the only fault of the game is that its very easy, so it may not challenge some of the veteren puzzle gamers out there but I assure you its refreshing and enjoyable either way. A fun game from the beginning and even more fun at the end. Enjoy peeps.
