Game Score: 8/10
Overall:8/10
I think that this game is quite a nice addition to the yugioh franchise. Lots of the different cards are available in the game and you are able to play online against lots of people around the world.
Gameplay: 8/10
This is what really makes a yugioh game good so it has to get a good score otherwise it is pointless getting the game. Fortunately, this game doesn't disappoint. As in most (all) Yugioh games, you begin with a starter deck. The particular starter deck you start with for this yugioh game is an Elemental Hero deck. You are able to duel all of the LV1 duelists and the aim is to beat them all 5 times to rise to the next level. When you reach LV4, you can't reach LV5 without doing some of the puzzles which also feature on this game.
The puzzles put you in a certain situation in a duel and ask you to win in that turn. The different puzzles may vary in difficulty.
If you did not play World Championship 2006, then theme/limited duels are a new feature that many people will enjoy. Theme duels challenge the player to perform a certain action in a duel. You will be graded C-S depending on how well you do. Limited duels ask you to add certain monster cards to your deck. Since there is only limit to what monster cards you add, you can add as many spell/trap cards as you wish. These two new modes are fun, but not for everyone. Some people will not want to go through the effort of changing a deck for every new challenge. Playing these modes are necessary to unlock level 5 and level 6 duelists.
If you are new to Yugioh, there are tutorials which you can go through to learn how to play. When I first played on my DS, I knew the basics but needed to make sure i knew everything and it provded me with a simple tutorial which also gave lots of detail.
One of the most important things this game has that WCT06 doesn't have is wi-fi. As I said in the intro, you can go online amd challenge anyone in the world. These duels tend to be a lot better than computer duels because you can find out how tough your deck really is comapred to the entire. There is a point system where as you win duels, you gain points and lose points for losing duels. One thing that happened to me was that I was about to win in a duel but before I could, that guy disconnected before I could win. This can get frustrating if it happens to you but doesn't happen often.
Graphics:6/10
The graphics are hard to rate because you only really see them whilist you're dueling and on the menu screen. The bottom screen displays the entire playing field from a bird's eye view. This screen is where the core gameplay happens. The bottom screen is also the 2D plane. The top screen displays each individual action. The top screen is also the 3D plane. When a monster is summoned it will go onto the field in 3D. The graphics are 'perfect' for a card game.
Controls:8/10
Since this game is on the DS, during duels, you are also able to use the touch screen as well the buttons. Each individual action that goes on the bottom screen is so small, that it can sometimes be easy to accidentally touch something that you did not mean to touch. Touch control can not be used for everything. If you need to read a card effect, you have to hold down the R button. If you need to chain certain cards, you have to hold down the A button. It depends on what you think is best. Overall, the controls are easy to use and accesible, precisely what is needed for a card game on a console.
