Transformers - Autobots: Reviews

Game Score: 6/10

Transformers: Autobots is a fair attempt at trying to recreate the game of the movie for the DS. Here we have TWO games. Autobots and Decepticons, in which you can ethier protect the earth, or destroy it.

STORY: The story is simple. You play a rookie Autobot who has landed on earth, following the arrival on Cybertron of a destress call from a Decepticon. You ethier go by the title of 'Young One' or 'Rookie,' depending on who's talking to you. As the story progresses, you later learn that the decepticon is Megatron, and that the reason the entire Autobot/decepticon army is on earth, is to find the Allspark. A decivce that can return life to the war ravaged Cybertron. The story closely mirrors that of the movie, with the human POV totally absant, as the Transformers themselves are the main focucs.

GRAHPICS: For a DS game, the graphics aren't bad at all. The transformers look like their movie counterparts, and even the locations are very well done from shop signs to the verious cars that move about. There are also little things thrown in that make the game enjoyable, like cracking the ground every time you jump, leaving scorch marks on the side of buildings from your laser blasts, and even sparking and bellowing a little smoke when your health starts to get dangerously low. However, the distance is always hidden by fog, and as it materialises out of the myst, it looks blocky, and sometimes hard to distinguish if your flying.

SOUND: The sound is awsome. It's astonishing that so much dialouge was put into this game. Fans of the Transformers will get much joy in the fact that Peter Cullan and Frak Welker have been brought on board to voice Megatron and Optimus Prime. The other voice's do excellent jobs as well, as the story progresses, the voice acting also helps with the enjoyment of the game. Other sounds are of bullets flying, lasers blasting, and missles shootings. Fans of the Transformers will recognise the familuar sounds of the laser blasts from the 80's cartoon, and the chatter between human viehcals is priceless. (Dispatch we have a... a... What's the code for Giant Robot Attack again?)

GAMEPLAY: This is where the game loses most of it's majic. The start of the game will blow ou away, as you work out what buttons do what, what your robot is capable of, and going into combat for the first time. However, after the first couple of missions, the game starts to become dully repeadative, with the missions basiclly involving racing from point 'A' to point 'B' within a time limit, blasting what ever needs to be blasted, or stealth reconasince. I recommend that you play a few missions of this game, then turn leave it be for a while, so you don't get board playing the missions. The controls are some what sluggish, and the camera angle is a nightmare. If you are running along, the camera follows you from behind. SImple enough right? Wrong. If you make a 180 turn, the camera angle dosen't turn with you automaticlly, which leaves you running towards the camera, with no idea what's in front of you. It turns after a while, but you have to manually work the camera. The horrible times with the camera angle is if you are inside a human base. Due to the small confines of the corridors, the camera comes in real close to the point where one wrong turn, and you've litterly got the camera up your arse. Combine this with running around in the heat of battle, trying to work out a stratigy to defeat the levels boss, all while blasting away, tends to be a little too overwhelming.

OVER ALL: Transformers can become repeative if you play it non stop, and you'll start to nod off. After a while, the little bells and whistles stop being atractive and you'll just continue playing just to see the end. Dispite such great attention to detail of the game's look, other things like gameplay suffer greatly. However, this game is still worth playing.
