The Pokemon franchise is one of the most popular franchises based off of a videogame. The only way you wouldn't hear about it is if you lived in a 1950's bomb shelter. Fanatics dress up as their favorite characters, and little boys and girls around the world watch the T.V. show. But the real treat has always been the addictive handheld games. How does the new one live up to the past ones?
Graphics:
Firstly, let's talk about graphics. Previous Pokemon games such as
Sapphire have always had good graphics for their platform. However, Pokemon Pearl feels like a very small upgrade when compared to better looking games like Super Mario 64 DS. The framerate is very shaky when walking across the overworld, and the models aren't very detailed. While some might argue that Pokemon is a handheld game, and isn't meant to have good graphics, I would have to tell them to look at better looking games on the D.S., that are way prettier, and ask them why those games have such better graphics. Also, the battle scenes are lackluster, and dont contain much animation. in fact, the Battles in Pearl look very similar to those of Gold and Silver.
Gameplay:
Pokemon games have always been surprisingly deep, considering the Childish look they all have. Pearl makes the game even deeper, by adding more types and moves. Another aspect of the gameplay that makes the game oh so addictive is the ability to collect over 400 Pokemon and customize each one with special moves and abilities. However, the gameplay does feel a bit like "more of the same."
Sound:
The songs in Pearl are hummable, and there are some ambient effects involved as well. And overall the sound is quite decent. However, the sounds that come from the Pokemon sound like the same ones used during the 8 bit handheld era.
Longevity:
The best aspect of the new Pokemon game is how long it lasts. One could play for hours a day trying to catch pokemon or having rematches for more than a year. Not to mention the fact that that you could play and trade with people online to recieve special items. Also, the main story is over 40 hours itself, and the world is the biggest yet.
Summary:
Moreover, the newest in the long running Pokemon series is a decent game.
