Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations: Reviews

Select Author:

Game Score: 9/10

I received this game for Christmas, and couldn't put it down for five days. Awesome.

Preface aside, I see that every reviewer on this site uses a normal out-of-ten scale for rating a game. This is my first review, and I'm gonna do something different, if a bit cheesy.

I give this game 4 out of 5 gavels.

Originality: 4 of 5 gavels.
Speaking of the series itself, it's basically a lawyer game. I have never heard of such a thing before Phoenix Wright's first game (and probably never will again outside of the Ace Attorney franchise), And it makes Court cases a LOT more entertaining than it sounds. Speaking of the originality of T&T alone, it doesn't introduce any new play elements but twists the story and characters to a new level, which is almost better in my opinion. The point of view jumps from the past to the present and back again, following two of Wright's mentor's earlier cases. Also, in addition to Phoenix, you play two other characters defending clients (though one is not necessarily a defense attorney).

Graphics: 3 of 5 gavels.
Detailed characters and even more detailed backgrounds where nothing seems out of place unless it's supposed to (like a clue). The DS has the capability to do better, but hey, it's a GBA port. I didn't expect too much anyway.

Sound: 3 of 5 gavels.
At essence, the music is the same ten tunes playing in the same kinds of situations. The best part of the sound is the voice acting. Different attorneys/prosecuters have different voices, each perfectly fiting to them. That's worth keeping the volume up.

Story: 4 of 5 gavels.
You play as a defense lawyer (or a prosecuter pretending to be a defense lawyer, in one chapter) defending various clients against a murder charge (Except one case, where the accused is primarily charged with theft. It escalates to murder, though.). It sounds simple enough, but the characters all have interesting/shocking backstories and quirky personalities that figure into the game, making the end result look like a cross between a soap opera and a sitcom, which is a good thing in this case.

Characters: 5 of 5 gavels.
I don't like to spoil the fun, so I can't go into much detail. What I can say is that all of the characters are so expressive in their own way, that you'll grow to either love or hate every single one. (Individually, not as a whole.)

I'd love to say that there's something wrong with you if you don't like Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations, but I can't. Truth is, every individual has their own likes and dislikes which make them unique, and the most I can do as a reviewer is share my own opinion. It's up to you to make your own decision as to how good this game is. But my opinion is, as stated above...

4.5 OUT OF 5 GAVELS.

Thank you listening (reading) to me ramble on. I go sleep now.
