Review for 2641 Pokemon Platinum - Japanese Version

Poketmonster Platina (original Japanese name) is the third in the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (DPPt) series.

Story 10/10:

The last snowrests are still shining on the earth in Sinnoh when your adventure starts in the small village Ftabatown near the Sinjilake. Since GBA times and political correctness you will have to fight against your neighbour and best friend since kindergarten, Yuki. The local Pokemon expert Prof. Nanakamado lives in Masagotown. The next really big city, though, is Kotobkicity. You will earn your first gymbadge in Kroganecity. If you play the girl (Hikari), a strangely french looking guy named Koki will stalk you all the time... ;-)

Platina continues the famous RPG tradition of the other Pokemongames before. You will have fun with secretbases again. It is a very nice feature that you only have to see all the existing Pokemon to fill your national Pokedex. The narrated storyline is trying to be richer compared to GBA times, but should still be playable without real knowledge of Japanese when familiar with general Pokemon concepts.
Compared to D/P, Platina offers:
an alternate beginning,
the Battle Recorder (for WiFi battles and for the Battle Frontier),
an enhanced WiFi area (random egg swap, larger..),
wandering trainers in Pokecenters and, as expected,
more available Pokemon: some of them before filling the national Pokedex.
And, last but not least, the Battle Frontier itself.

Fun Fact: Shinnoh is the corresponding Pokemon world to the japanese Hokkaido isle in the north of Japan.

Sound 10/10:

Like for D/P, the sound is excellent.

Graphics 9/10:

Also if 3D now, the graphics didn't really change since Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald times. In other words: The most traditional approach was chosen when porting from GBA to DS.
Like Gold/Silver/Chrystal you see a difference between morning, day, evening and night, but this just gives sometimes the crappy feeling that you are only running around in the dark.
Compared to D/P only minor (but nice!) graphic improvements have been added.

Controls 5/10:

Practically no big new features have been added to not destroy the famous flagship. Most of the time you will not notice you are using a DS and not a GBA. If you are looking for a complete makeover of the general Pokemon idea and really use your DS, you are maybe happier with Pokemon Ranger.

Conclusion:

DPPt feels smooth and polished, but can never really surprise compared to the old GSC days.
Anyhow, if you want a possibility to collect all your old GBA Pokemon in one place and play endlessly with your friends over WiFi, go and get this game! It is clearly the best of the DPPt series.
