"Mr. Demon plans to steal the Ninja Star Cookie Recipe! Stop him, for the whole ninja economy depends on it!"
Ninjatown is an innovative twist on action/stategy style game. It is very similar in effect to a Tower Defence game you might play on Warcraft. Using interesting concepts such as different ninjas, devils, Ol' Master Ninja Powers, Tokens and implementing them into a simple system, Ninjatown is indeed a riveting, friendly and definitely humourous game. Who wouldn't want to play as those cute little guys.
Plot
Mr. Demon is planning to steal the recipe to the economy staple, Ninja Star Cookies. As the citizens of Ninjatown, you must prevent the devil army from doing so. Amongst all the chaos, there is still time for buffoonery within dialogue, such as excessive use of the word 'Wee'.
Gameplay 10/10
For a strategy game, Ninjatown uses simple yet challenging system. Essentially you build huts, from which ninjas spawn to intefere with the enemy. You must plan where to build the ninjas so that they can effectively takedown the devils, as each has their own strengths which your ninjas can exploit. To go with this, you also build Modifier buildings, which augment nearby ninjas, as well as Ol' Master Ninja Powers and Tokens, which help with the defensive. Each mission has its own complication, but all are able to be won, regardless of skill level, while still presenting a challenge.
Sound 7/10
The sound isn't that various, but it does adhere to the ninja theme rather well. The SFX of the attacks of the ninjas and devils are significant but not as annoying as the general music. Essentially, the sound works well with the game, but can leave an annoying ring in your ears.
Graphics 8/10
Not high end but decent, the graphical content of the game is 2D. This works well since it is like a Tower Defence, so an overall view of the map is helpful. The animation is not bad, being bright and vibrant as opposed to Ninja Gaiden, and I think it works well compared to it being in a 3D perspective. As I say, simplicity is more appealing than complication, which is beautifully presented in this game.
Adaptability 10/10
This type of game works very well on the DS. The touch screen allows easy manipulation of the challenge presented in the game and unlike other DS games which very basically utilise only button functions, Ninjatown uses the touch screen and the microphone for a very useful Ol' Master Ninja Power.
Overall Performance: 8/10
Ninjatown appeals to gamers of all forms. Its simple yet challenging design enables all skill levels to begin anew and start again. The hilarity encountered as part of the plot is quite tasteful, as is the general thought of using cute ninjas and devils as opposed to something a lot more brutish. I rank it an 8/10, but perhaps gamers that solely like Strategic gameplay would appeal to a 9/10.
