There is some similarities between this game and the Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. Both are in a fantasy setting and use color grids that require you to match 3 or more colors of the same type for use of an attack or spell.
In Kingdoms, you do not move the color "dots" rather you click on the outside borders of the square which brings slides one color into the grid from that side while removing the color from the grid on the exact opposite side...you get an indication as to what color will be slid into the grid.
You start with one hero and gain more as you progress into the game. You can have up to 4 heroes at once and each hero can command up to a maximum of 4 units. These units require "points" which must be factored as you have a maximum number of such points that can be used. Such points determine spells, used, units used, relics equipped and items equipped.
The units themselves are broken into 3 types, normal (which attack the first enemy unit only), ranged (which attacks a random enemy unit) and magical (which attacks first enemy unit but if more damage in left over, it goes to the second and so one until all damage is used up).
You also earn gold which helps unlock spells, get items, and hire units. In addition to gold, you need to finish mini games to get above mentioned as well as to destroy "evil" boxes to progress the story.
Although you cannot create your own items and you do not have a mount like in Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, I find this game equally fun once you overcome the poor user manual.
